The war involving Iran entered its 12th day as the United States and Israel launched large-scale airstrikes across Iran, including its capital Tehran.
The military escalation is closely tied to tensions over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil shipments. The United States sees securing the safety of vessels passing through the strait as a critical priority.
During a Pentagon briefing, U.S. officials warned that the latest operation could become “the most intense day of attacks” against Iran. Israel said its strikes targeted a weapons research and development complex at a military school run by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
Residents in Tehran described the bombardment as the most severe since the war began. One local resident told Reuters that the night of air raids “felt like hell.”
Iran has continued retaliatory attacks against Israel and nearby U.S. military facilities. Iranian media reported missile strikes targeting the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain and American bases in Iraq.
The Pentagon said 140 U.S. troops have been wounded during the first 10 days of operations, including eight with serious injuries.
Iranian officials claimed that about 1,300 civilians have been killed and roughly 10,000 civilian facilities destroyed since the start of the airstrikes.
Meanwhile, the international community is discussing measures to address the economic and energy impacts of the conflict, with G7 leaders planning talks on the issue.
