South Korea’s defense industry is drawing global attention after the Korean-made air defense system Cheongung-II reportedly demonstrated strong performance during the Iran war.
According to the Financial Times, Korean defense companies are emerging as competitive alternatives to the U.S. Patriot missile system amid the ongoing conflict. The success of LIG Nex1’s Cheongung-II is expected to increase global demand for Korean defense technology.
Cheongung-II is a mid-range air defense interceptor system designed to perform a similar role to the U.S. Patriot PAC-3 system. It has already been exported to countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.
During the conflict, Cheongung-II units deployed in the UAE reportedly launched around 60 interceptor missiles and achieved a success rate of about 96 percent. The system had not previously been tested in real combat conditions.
Following the reports, the stock price of LIG Nex1, the company producing the system, rose nearly 47 percent compared with its level before the conflict began.
The Financial Times noted that the success of Cheongung-II highlights the growing strength of South Korea’s defense ecosystem, where multiple companies collaborate on advanced weapon systems.
One of the system’s advantages is cost competitiveness. While a Patriot PAC-3 interceptor reportedly costs about $3.7 million, a Cheongung-II interceptor is estimated to cost roughly $1.1 million.
Analysts believe this price competitiveness and production speed could help Korean defense firms expand exports to the Middle East and Europe.
