Chinese experts expressed cautious optimism that relations between the United States and China could move from confrontation toward coexistence ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned visit to China later this month.
According to the South China Morning Post, scholars speaking at a seminar hosted by the University of Hong Kong’s Centre on Contemporary China and the World said the bilateral relationship currently shows a certain level of stability despite global tensions.
They suggested that the two countries may attempt to manage competition and seek ways to coexist rather than intensify direct confrontation.
Da Wei, director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, argued that the nature of U.S.–China relations has fundamentally changed compared with earlier periods marked by repeated crises and diplomatic engagement.
He said both countries are strong nationalist states and the key issue now is how they can coexist in the evolving global order.
Experts also expect discussions during the visit to cover economic and trade issues as well as security topics such as Taiwan, the international order, and the Middle East situation.
