The United States is considering several measures, including releasing oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), to stabilize global energy markets after a sharp rise in oil prices.
According to Bloomberg, U.S. President Donald Trump is reviewing options to ease pressure on the energy market following soaring oil prices linked to tensions with Iran. One of the most likely measures is a release of strategic oil reserves.
Global crude prices briefly surpassed $100 per barrel before retreating to the $80 range after Trump suggested the possibility of an early end to the conflict. Rising oil prices have also pushed U.S. retail gasoline prices to their highest level since August 2024.
Market analysts believe the United States could coordinate with the Group of Seven (G7) countries to release strategic reserves to stabilize global energy supplies. Finance ministers from G7 nations have already indicated that they are prepared to take such steps if necessary.
The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve currently holds about 415 million barrels of crude oil, a system created after the oil shocks of the 1970s. By comparison, China’s strategic oil reserves are estimated at around 1.4 billion barrels.
However, releasing the reserves could carry political risks because Republicans have previously criticized similar moves by the previous administration.
The recent surge in oil prices was largely triggered by the disruption of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage that handles about 20% of global oil shipments.
