The U.S. Department of Defense has reportedly ordered the removal of artificial intelligence products made by Anthropic from military systems within 180 days.
According to CBS News, the Pentagon distributed an official memo to senior military officials shortly after designating Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” company.
The memo outlines procedures to remove Anthropic’s AI technology from systems related to national security, including nuclear operations, ballistic missile defense, and cyber defense systems.
Companies that have contracts with the Pentagon were also instructed to stop using Anthropic products in work connected to the Defense Department within the same 180-day period.
The Pentagon’s Chief Information Officer explained that vulnerabilities in such systems could be exploited by adversaries, potentially creating serious risks for military personnel.
The conflict reportedly stems from disagreements between Anthropic and the U.S. government over the use of the company’s AI models in large-scale domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons systems.
Anthropic has responded by filing lawsuits against the Defense Department and several federal agencies, asking the court to overturn the designation and rule that the government’s ban on its technology is unconstitutional.
