South Korea’s gross national income (GNI) per capita remained in the $36,000 range for the third consecutive year, mainly due to currency effects despite economic growth.
According to data released by the Bank of Korea, the country’s nominal GNI per capita reached $36,855 in 2025, up 0.3% from $36,745 in 2024.
In Korean won terms, per capita income rose to 52.416 million won, a 4.6% increase from the previous year. However, the depreciation of the Korean won against the U.S. dollar limited growth when measured in dollar terms.
South Korea’s nominal GDP reached 2,663.3 trillion won, growing 4.2% year-on-year. But in dollar terms it declined 0.1% to $1.8727 trillion, reflecting the impact of exchange rate fluctuations.
South Korea first surpassed $30,000 in per capita income in 2014, approaching $38,000 in 2021. Since then, currency weakness has kept the figure in the $36,000 range.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s per capita GNI reached $40,585, while Japan recorded the low $38,000 range, both higher than South Korea.
The Bank of Korea estimates that if exchange rate effects remain stable, South Korea could exceed $40,000 in per capita income by 2027.
