Residents in the northwestern Seoul metropolitan area are welcoming news that the extension of Seoul Subway Line 5 to Gimpo and Geomdan has passed a preliminary feasibility study.
Local citizens expressed hope that the project will help ease severe transportation congestion in the region. Community groups said the approval was overdue but welcomed the opportunity to finally move forward with the project.
Gimpo is currently the only large city near Seoul without a direct metropolitan railway connection to the capital. The city relies mainly on the Gimpo Goldline, a light rail system built with two-car trains that suffers from extreme crowding and has been widely criticized for its high congestion levels.
Local authorities plan to pursue broader railway expansion in the future, including potential extensions of Seoul Subway Line 2, Incheon Subway Line 2, and Seoul Subway Line 9 to complete a wider metropolitan rail network.
The Line 5 extension project will cost about 3.56 trillion won. It will extend the line 25.8 kilometers from the Banghwa depot in Seoul to the Gimpo Hangang 2 public housing district, building nine stations and a new train depot along the route.
The government initially targeted 2031 for completion, but the timeline could be pushed back due to delays in the feasibility review process.
