South Korea’s Justice Minister Chung Sung-ho denied allegations that he intended to direct prosecutors to withdraw indictments in certain cases.
Speaking to reporters on March 11, Chung dismissed claims linking the withdrawal of indictments with discussions about supplementary investigation powers, calling them unrealistic and inappropriate allegations.
He stressed that he has no intention of ordering prosecutors to cancel indictments and that the justice minister is not in a position to instruct prosecutors on such decisions.
However, Chung explained that withdrawing an indictment is not legally prohibited and may be possible if prosecutors determine that prosecutorial authority has been excessively abused or misused.
When asked whether the government would investigate how the allegation emerged, he said it would be awkward and inappropriate to launch such a probe.
The minister also said that the controversy surrounding the claim has dragged discussions on prosecutorial reform into unnecessary disputes and emphasized the need to focus on constructive reform debates.
