THAAD Interceptors May Move to Middle East

Some interceptor missiles from the U.S. military’s THAAD missile defense system stationed in South Korea may soon be transferred to the Middle East, according to government and military sources.
The interceptors were reportedly moved from the THAAD base in Seongju to Osan Air Base, where they could be loaded onto large U.S. military transport aircraft and sent to the Middle East in the near future.
Each THAAD launcher can carry eight interceptor missiles. If all six launch vehicles were involved in the transfer, up to 48 interceptors may have been moved to Osan.
However, major components of the THAAD battery—including launchers and radar systems—remain at the Seongju base, meaning the system can still operate. Additional interceptors are also believed to be stored at Camp Carroll in North Gyeongsang Province.
Even so, the transfer of dozens of interceptors could impose some operational limitations on the missile defense system in South Korea.
The move is believed to be linked to rising demand for air defense capabilities in the Middle East as U.S. forces face increasing missile and drone threats in the region.
South Korean officials reportedly expressed concern about the transfer but acknowledged that it is difficult to fully prevent such moves given the operational needs of U.S. forces under the alliance framework.
