Lee Jae-myung stated that homeowners with multiple properties should not be forced to sell if they choose not to.
However, he emphasized that the government will redesign policies to ensure that holding multiple homes becomes less financially advantageous.
Speaking during his visit to Singapore on March 1, President Lee explained that real estate speculation has persisted not simply because of individual decisions, but because previous policies made property ownership highly profitable. He suggested that the structural design of the system encouraged investment-driven home purchases.
The president indicated that future housing policies will focus on adjusting taxation, financial regulations, and other institutional mechanisms so that speculative ownership no longer yields excessive returns. According to Lee, a properly functioning society is one where policy frameworks discourage behavior that conflicts with broader public interests.
During a meeting with overseas Koreans, he reassured citizens concerned about housing instability, saying the government aims to create conditions where people do not have to worry about housing affordability when considering returning home.
Lee’s remarks signal a renewed emphasis on restructuring the real estate market to prioritize stability over speculative gains, while avoiding direct mandates requiring property sales.
