In the fourth quarter of 2025, roughly 25% of South Korean households spent more on consumption than their disposable income, reaching the highest deficit rate reported in six years, according to national statistical data and household trend surveys.
This growing deficit situation stems largely from expenditures rising faster than income gains. Among the lowest income group—the bottom 20%—nearly 60% of households lived beyond their means in the latest quarter. Rising loan balances and increased interest costs have further constrained household budgets.
Economists warn that households with diminished spending capacity may lack the means to invest or build assets. Persistent inflation and escalating interest burden are contributing to heightened economic stress for middle- and lower-income families
