South Korea’s financial markets experienced sharp volatility as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and fluctuating oil prices shook investor sentiment.
After plunging the previous day, the benchmark KOSPI index rebounded strongly, rising 280.72 points, or 5.35 percent, to close at 5,532.59.
The Korean won also strengthened sharply. The won–dollar exchange rate fell by 26.3 won to 1,469.2 per dollar, marking the largest daily drop since late last year.
Global oil prices, which had surged past $100 per barrel amid escalating conflict, eased back to the $80 range as major economies discussed measures to stabilize energy markets.
Finance ministers from the Group of Seven signaled that strategic petroleum reserves could be released if necessary, helping calm market fears.
Investor sentiment improved as concerns over a prolonged war eased, reducing demand for safe-haven assets such as the U.S. dollar.
Foreign investors returned to the market after four trading sessions, purchasing about 1.1 trillion won worth of stocks, while retail investors sold roughly 1.8 trillion won. Major technology shares including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix posted strong gains.
