South Korea’s stock market ended mixed on March 6, with the KOSPI finishing slightly higher while the KOSDAQ recorded a strong gain.
The KOSPI closed at 5,584.87, up 0.97 points (0.02%) from the previous session. The index initially opened lower but recovered as retail investors stepped in with strong buying.
Market sentiment was affected by rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Concerns over potential military escalation involving the United States and Iran pushed global oil prices higher and weighed on investor confidence.
Retail investors purchased roughly 2.9 trillion won worth of stocks, helping support the market. Meanwhile, foreign and institutional investors sold approximately 1.95 trillion won and 1.11 trillion won, respectively.
Among large-cap stocks, automobile and energy-related companies posted gains. Shares of Hyundai Motor, Kia, LG Energy Solution, and Doosan Enerbility rose during the session, while defense-related stocks also climbed amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
However, major semiconductor stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix declined, limiting the index’s overall rise.
The KOSDAQ index showed stronger momentum, ending at 1,154.67, up 38.26 points (3.43%). The rally followed the previous day’s surge of more than 14%, the largest daily gain in its history.
Institutional investors were net buyers in the KOSDAQ market, while retail and foreign investors sold shares.
Battery and biotechnology stocks were among the major contributors to the index’s gains.
Market analysts noted that although foreign selling and currency volatility weighed on the market, bargain-hunting by retail investors helped stabilize the KOSPI.
