The historical Korean film “The King Who Lived Among Us” has surpassed 10 million moviegoers, marking a major box office milestone.

According to distributor Showbox, the film exceeded the 10 million ticket mark on its 31st day of release, becoming the 34th film in Korean box office history to reach that figure.

The achievement is notable as theater attendance has declined in recent years. It is the first domestic film in two years to surpass 10 million viewers. In 2024, “Exhuma” and “The Roundup 4” previously crossed the milestone.

The film portrays the final chapter in the life of King Danjong, who was dethroned and exiled to Yeongwol in Gangwon Province. There, he spends his remaining days interacting with villagers and forming unexpected bonds.

One of the film’s central storylines follows village chief Eom Heung-do, who was assigned to monitor the exiled king but gradually develops a deep human connection with him.

Actors Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon lead the cast, while Yoo Ji-tae and Jeon Mi-do also received praise for their performances.

Director Jang Hang-jun achieved his first 10-million-viewer film nearly 24 years after his debut in 2002.

For actor Yoo Hae-jin, the film marks his fifth appearance in a 10-million-viewer movie, following major hits including “The King and the Clown,” “Veteran,” “A Taxi Driver,” and “Exhuma.”

Park Ji-hoon reached the milestone with his first major commercial film, while Yoo Ji-tae also achieved his first 10-million-viewer film in his acting career.

Rated for viewers aged 12 and above, the movie attracted families and dominated the box office during the Lunar New Year and Independence Movement Day holidays.

The film also became the fourth historical Korean film to surpass 10 million viewers, following “The King and the Clown,” “Masquerade,” and “The Admiral: Roaring Currents.”

Director Jang said he felt both grateful and cautious about the success, adding that he was thankful for the overwhelming support from audiences.
