The plan to extend stock trading hours in South Korea may be delayed as financial authorities review concerns raised by the industry.
According to financial industry sources, the Korea Exchange recently held emergency meetings with brokerage firms to gather opinions regarding the proposed extension of trading hours. Some companies and labor groups expressed concerns about preparation time and operational burdens.
The exchange previously proposed expanding trading hours by introducing both pre-market and after-hours sessions. Under the plan, pre-market trading would run from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., while after-hours trading would operate from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. after the regular session.
Brokerage firms have argued that additional time is required to prepare IT systems and conduct testing to ensure stable operations. As a result, the Korea Exchange said it will review the readiness of each brokerage and consider adjusting the implementation schedule.
While supporters say longer trading hours could enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s capital markets in line with global trends, labor groups have criticized the plan, warning that it may increase workloads and potentially heighten market volatility.
Authorities are expected to continue discussions with industry participants before finalizing the timeline for the new trading system.
