Many Iranians living abroad are expressing concern after Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen as the new supreme leader of Iran.
According to reports, members of the Iranian diaspora view the leadership transition as a form of hereditary succession, since Mojtaba is the son of the late supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
An Iranian living in France said the leadership selection should never be hereditary, arguing that placing the son of the former leader in power signals that the current political system will not change.
Another Iranian student abroad said that while Mojtaba had long been mentioned as a possible successor due to his father’s age, many people did not expect the transition to actually happen.
Some overseas Iranians also said it is difficult to understand how people inside Iran are reacting because internet access within the country is heavily restricted during the current tensions.
An Iranian resident in Berlin described Mojtaba as potentially “more dangerous than his father,” reflecting deep concerns among parts of the diaspora about the country’s political future.
