South Korea recorded its highest number of February births in seven years, with around 23,000 newborns and the fastest growth rate on record for the month.
According to official data, 22,898 babies were born in February, marking a 13.6% increase from a year earlier. Birth numbers have been rising steadily since mid-2024.
The increase was largely driven by women in their 30s, whose birth rates saw significant growth across both early and late 30s age groups. Meanwhile, births among women under 25 slightly declined.
The total fertility rate also improved to 0.93, higher than the previous year. Considering February has fewer days, the figure is viewed as relatively strong.
Marriage registrations declined to about 18,500 cases, mainly due to fewer working days during the Lunar New Year holiday period.
Divorces dropped sharply to one of the lowest levels in decades, and deaths also decreased. However, the number of deaths still exceeded births, resulting in a continued natural population decline.
