The United States has once again expressed concerns over South Korea’s network usage fee policy, signaling renewed tensions in digital trade.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative highlighted the issue on social media while listing what it described as unusual foreign trade barriers faced by American companies.
According to U.S. officials, charging additional network usage fees to content providers deviates from global norms and could disadvantage American tech firms. They argue that users already pay internet service providers, making extra charges unnecessary.
However, South Korean telecom companies such as SK Telecom and KT Corporation maintain that the surge in data traffic—driven largely by streaming platforms—has significantly increased infrastructure costs.
They insist that large content providers should share part of the financial burden required to maintain and expand network capacity.
The dispute reflects a broader global debate over how to fairly distribute costs in the digital economy. If disagreements persist, the issue could evolve into a larger trade conflict between the two countries.
