Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Beijing next week, according to a report by the South China Morning Post. Attention is focusing on China’s diplomatic strategy as Xi Jinping is expected to host Putin shortly after concluding the state visit schedule of Donald Trump.
According to the report, Putin will visit China for a one-day trip on the 20th. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also confirmed that preparations for the visit are nearly complete.
However, the visit is reportedly not expected to take the form of a full state visit. Chinese officials indicated that the schedule will likely focus on practical working-level meetings rather than large-scale welcoming ceremonies or military parades. Reports suggest that much of the Chinese government’s resources had recently been concentrated on preparations for Trump’s visit.
The timing of the visit is being viewed as highly symbolic in terms of China’s foreign policy strategy. It is effectively the first time China has hosted both U.S. and Russian leaders for separate bilateral meetings within the span of a single month.
The SCMP analyzed that China is attempting to maintain ties with both the United States and Russia while strengthening its image as a “key mediator” amid shifts in the global order.
Meanwhile, Middle East diplomacy is also emerging as a major issue on China’s agenda. Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to visit China starting on the 23rd. Officially, the visit is focused on economic cooperation discussions, but there is growing speculation that U.S.-Iran ceasefire negotiations and broader Middle East tensions could also be addressed.
Experts say China has recently been expanding diplomatic engagement simultaneously with the U.S., Russia, and Middle Eastern countries in an effort to increase its influence on the global stage.
