The number of young people in South Korea who are neither working nor actively seeking jobs continues to rise across generations.
According to recent data, around 217,000 individuals aged 25–29 were classified as “inactive” in 2024, more than double the figure recorded two decades ago.
The increase is particularly noticeable among college graduates, showing a steady upward trend in recent years.
At the same time, the average time it takes for young people to secure their first job has also lengthened, now exceeding about 12 months.
Experts point to structural issues such as labor market mismatch, population aging, and prolonged economic slowdown as key causes.
They stress the need for stronger policies to help young people enter the workforce more effectively.
