KOSPI Hits Another Record High Despite U.S. Tariff Concerns… Is 6,000 Within Reach?
On the 24th, South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index renewed its all-time high after fluctuating throughout the trading session, moving closer to the symbolic 6,000-point milestone.
The KOSPI closed at 5,969.64, up 123.55 points or 2.11 percent from the previous session. The KOSDAQ index also extended its gains, rising 1.13 percent to finish at 1,165.00.
Early in the session, the market experienced some downward pressure due to overnight weakness in U.S. equities. However, strong buying by institutional investors, particularly in semiconductor stocks, pushed the index higher and ultimately drove it to a new record.
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix each posted fresh highs, surpassing the 200,000 won and 1 million won levels respectively. Their strong performance played a pivotal role in lifting the broader market.
Meanwhile, in the foreign exchange market, the Korean won weakened slightly in the afternoon, with the won-dollar exchange rate holding around the 1,442 won level. Trading patterns showed divergence among investors, with retail and foreign investors net sellers, while institutions remained net buyers.
Although major U.S. indices closed lower overnight, strength in South Korea’s semiconductor sector reversed early losses and shifted overall market sentiment.
