Financial markets in South Korea plunged sharply as the conflict between the United States and Iran heightened global uncertainty. On March 3, the KOSPI index fell more than 7% in a single day following broad sell-offs by foreign and institutional investors seeking to reduce exposure to risk assets.
The benchmark KOSPI closed at 5,791.91 points, marking one of the largest one-day declines in recent history. While foreign and institutional investors exited positions, individual investors were net buyers, although not enough to offset the overall downward trend.
The KOSDAQ also declined amid the market turmoil, reflecting widespread negative sentiment. In contrast, gold prices climbed, underscoring a shift toward perceived safe-haven assets.
The Korean won weakened, with the USD/KRW exchange rate climbing into the mid-1,460 range, indicating strong pressure on the local currency as geopolitical risks weighed on investor confidence.
