The conflict triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran is reportedly giving Russia an unexpected strategic advantage. According to The Wall Street Journal, large numbers of missile defense interceptors are being used in the Middle East, reducing supplies needed for Ukraine’s air defense.

The United States and several Gulf countries have deployed hundreds of interceptors to defend against Iranian ballistic missiles and attack drones. Systems such as the Patriot PAC‑3 interceptor missile have been heavily used during the early stages of the conflict.

Intercepting a ballistic missile often requires at least two interceptor missiles, and additional launches may be needed if the first attempts fail. Each interceptor costs several million dollars and requires complex manufacturing and international supply chains, making rapid production difficult.

The situation is particularly concerning for Ukraine, which relies heavily on Western air defense systems to counter Russian missile and drone attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently emphasized that interceptor missiles are a matter of survival for his country and said he has asked European allies whether the Middle East conflict could affect weapons supplies.

According to intelligence assessments, Russia currently has the capacity to produce around 80 ballistic missiles per month. It has also developed large-scale production of attack drones based on designs originally created in Iran.

Analysts warn that Western countries were slow to expand ground-based air defense production, allowing adversaries such as Russia, Iran, and China to focus on mass-producing cheaper missiles and drones.

Meanwhile, defense contractor Lockheed Martin plans to increase annual production of Patriot interceptor missiles from roughly 600 units today to about 2,000 by the end of the decade.
