China has set its economic growth target for the year at between 4.5 percent and 5 percent, signaling a cautious approach to managing its economy amid multiple challenges.
Premier Li Qiang announced the target during the government work report at the opening session of the National People’s Congress in Beijing. The new goal is lower than the “around 5 percent” target maintained in recent years and represents one of the lowest targets in decades.
Analysts say the adjustment reflects a combination of internal and external pressures facing the Chinese economy. Domestic challenges such as a prolonged property sector downturn, weak consumer demand, and youth unemployment are weighing on growth. At the same time, external factors including U.S. tariffs and technology restrictions have increased economic uncertainty.
The government also set its consumer inflation target at around 2 percent and maintained the fiscal deficit ratio at roughly 4 percent of GDP. Authorities plan to support economic activity through expanded infrastructure spending and the issuance of special government bonds.
In addition, China emphasized boosting domestic demand and strengthening technological capabilities. The government plans to increase investment in research and development and accelerate innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and emerging industries.
Experts say the new growth target reflects Beijing’s strategy of balancing economic stability with structural reforms as the country navigates a complex global environment.
